Warriors and Patriots - Secord, Brant, D'Iberville, Currie: The Stories Behind the Statues     4th Stage
Petronella Van Dijk Pierre Lemoyne d'Iberville In 1686 Iberville began a brilliant career as soldier and sailor. After almost succeeding in expelling all English settlement on Newfoundland, he led an expedition to rediscover the mouth of the Mississippi River and colonize Louisiana. Petronella Van Dijk has been organizing a storytelling festival in Quebec for 15 years and at the urging of her storyteller friends became a teller herself some years ago. She communicates to audiences her deep understanding of the power of words and stories - especially folktales. She has told at events in Canada, Cuba, Europe, and in her native Netherlands.
Robert Lavigne Joseph Brant This Mohawk war chief and statesman fought with the British in the Seven Years War and the American Revolutionary War. In recognition of this service, the Governor of Canada granted the Six Nations Indians a large tract of land along the Grand River near what is now Brantford, Ontario. Passionate storyteller, Robert Lavigne created Jo Maple, a Métis born in 1780 who owes his longevity to maple sap. Throughout his many adventures, he met Joseph Brant, two years before his death. Jo will tell us the story of a man, reflecting on his life as a war chief and his lifelong mission to help his Mohawk people.
Lorne Brown Sir Arthur Currie Arthur Currie's leadership played a role in every major action of the Canadian forces on the Western Front, achieving success against all odds at Passchendaele late in 1917 and leading the Canadian Corps to victory at Amiens in August 1918. Lorne Brown is a singer of old songs and a teller of old tales. A storytelling elder, he has sung and told his stories all across Canada and abroad. A co-founder of The Storytellers School of Toronto, Lorne is also co-artistic director of the Legless Stocking Company.
Mary Eileen McClear Laura Secord On 21 June 1813, after overhearing American officers planning a surprise attack on a Canadian outpost, Laura resolved to warn the outpost commander herself. Her courageous action favourably altered the course of the war in that area. Mary-Eileen McClear has performed across North America at schools, conferences and festivals, as well as on CBC radio, at Toronto's Harbourfront, and the Stratford Festival. She is founder of The Story Barn, a centre for storytelling sessions, courses and workshops in Baden, Ontario, now in its 20th year.
