3 Julie
Larocque o/a Lee
Baillie:
Julie Larocque started to play piano when she was 5. Now
25, Julie’s success continues as she prepares to release her
second album Observatory. Several tracks from the album have
aired on CBC Radio One All in a Day, In Town and Out, Richardson’s
Roundup, and CKCU FM Window of Opportunity with Dean Verger.
Television appearances include CJOH Midday News, ROGERS, and
The NewRO. Her musical style has evolved from transient New
Age to edgy Worldbeat as the result of reinventing ambient
music to produce a more appealing live performance.
Lee Baillie studied sitar and tablas under Hardeep
Buckshi until he moved to London, England, where he studied
under Punita Gupta (trained by Ravi Shankar) for 2 years.
Lee currently lives in Ottawa and attends Algonquin College.
He freelances as a local sitar/tabla player, and can be found
playing jazz guitar at Open Stages around the city.

4 Julie
Kryk:
This
22-year-old native of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, writes her
own vibrant brand of acoustic pop/rock -- songs of hope, love,
heartache, and observation that combine uncommonly rich layers
of melody with unmistakable sincerity, and soulful vulnerability.
Julie Kryk's songwriting style is a confluence of her own
musical sensibilities with her vast influences -- ranging
from The Beatles, to acoustic Led Zeppelin, to U2, to Sarah
McLachlan. The first confirmation of Julie's immense talents
came in 1998, when she turned heads in a roomful of Motown's
finest budding female talent at the Detroit-area Lilith Fair
talent-search finals. Kryk, then just 18, sang three of her
compositions accompanied only by her acoustic guitar, while
the seasoned professionals she competed against brought their
slick backing bands. Kryk won the competition hands down,
winning her a spot on the hottest tour of the year, Lilith
Fair.

10 The
Laws:
The Laws are John and Michele, husband-and-wife acoustic songwriting
duo living on the west coast of Canada, performing original
music that crosses the boundaries of country, bluegrass and
folk. Known for their "tight-as-a-glove" harmony singing,
John and Michele's vocal harmonies are exquisite and exciting,
their solos powerful at times, angelic at others. With John
on lead guitar and mandolin, Michele, rhythm guitar and bass,
instrumental work is flawless and inventive.
"John
and Michele Law's songs seem to be the lost essence of bluegrass
and country music which has now become so commercial and formulaic
sounding." Randy Bachman

Crete:
Nonie grew up in Penetanguishene, went to Humber College for
music in Toronto and lived in Kitchener for a while where

storyteller and a prolific songwriter, Crete's heartfelt and
evocative lyrics, her abundance of energy and vitality, her
talents as a composer, guitarist and harmonica player, and
her natural musical diversity has endeared her to audiences
of all ages.

18 Cheza:
"Cheza" is a Swahili word that means "to dance, to play."
Cheza's music has been described as Afro-pop, "garage-soukous",
and folk-African fusion. You decide. Cheza was formed in 1993
by singer-guitar player Paul Weber. Paul lived briefly in
Senegal, west Africa where his interest in African music began.
The search for others who shared his love of African styles
led to the formation of Cheza, a seven-piece, Ottawa, Canada-based
band.

24 Wendy DeMos / Beth
Cahill:
Wendy
DeMos has released two CDs for adults, and written and performed
children's shows. Writing from a spiritual perspective, her
songs are poignant moments, such as "Almost Got Your
Letter".
Beth
is inspired by many acoustic traditions: bluegrass, Celtic,
folk and jazz. She presents her original songs via the mandolin
and tenor guitar. Her voice and songwriting are pleasantly
quirky, and make me smile.

25 Jamie
Clarke / Pam Hodges:
Jamie appeared out of nowhere. Suddenly he was in Ottawa,
on my stage, and we were happy. His voice might be a quieter
Tom Waits, his songwriting intelligent enough to make one
listen many times. Almost shy on stage his sound is even,
and enjoyable.
Pam
was taking voice lessons years ago when she first appeared
on my stage. Since that time Pam has appeared at many fund
raisers, and supported her church. Now she returns to our
stage for an evening of songs from people such as Gershwin.
