September Concert Details:

Sep 6 Maria Hawkins with David Foster
Miss Hawkins began studying vocal music through a private tutor at an early age. She was evaluated through Royal Conservatory of Music testing and had her first major solo debut before a 500 + crowd at the age of seven. Maria holds and entertains any audience with her strong stage presence and her confident, soulful and emotion-filled vocals. Through her love of music and her unique stage persona, she maintains a good rapport with her audience. That rapport comes from a life full of experiences and her mixed roots (Acadian, Indian and Afro-American). Maria's love for music is contagious and she shares her energy with every audience. With a plethora of experiences accumulated over 28 years of parenting, 12 of which were spent singing in small concerts, fund-raisers and in development of children's programming; Maria decided to join The Cisco Systems Bluesfests' Blues in the Schools Program in 1998. Her message is one of self-empowerment through "making the most out of what you have" Maria has inspired and supported countless musicians young and old, in the National Capital while sharing her knowledge and experience for the benefit of their individual talents and music careers. Maria is the Program Coordinator behind the "Blues in the Schools" program sponsored by The Cisco Systems Bluesfest. For two years, she worked alongside Blues Educator, TJ Wheeler during his two-week residency programs in 14 schools in the Ottawa area. Following TJ Wheelers departures every April, Maria acts as Program Development Facilitator for the next 2 months developing the children within the program both musically and emotionally towards their performances in front of the Bluesfest audience in July. On top of documenting, assessing, and developing the "Blues in Schools" program, she has recruited tutorial support staff and tutored over 150 children in the last two years of program operation.

Sep 7 Lynda Blair & Nathalie Ladouceur
Somewhere in the cosmic sceme of things, it was destined for Lynda Blair and Nathalie Ladouceur to perform music together. Lynda, an anglophone, developed a love of French language and culture through her mother, who taught French, and has always been reaching: reaching across cultural and linguistic boundaries. Nathalie Ladouceur, a francophone, is a performer originally from l'Ile du Grand Calumet, right smack dab between Ontario and Quebec, in the Ottawa River, geographically located right between English and French Canada. Although Lynda Blair does not define herself as a singer/songwriter, this is what she is. For Lynda, music is a tool. If used well, it allows her to sift through personal experience, and produce something more universal. For her, performance is not so much about the music itself, as what she is saying through the music. This comes through in the emotional quality of Lynda's voice. She has performed at many different venues, and Lynda's strength is in her lyrics. Lynda Blair currently lives near Wakefield, Quebec. Nathalie grew up immersed in traditional french folk music, and learned to play this music on guitar. From the age of 9, her youth was spent performing at weddings, community gatherings, and on CJOH. She learned english through participating in Irish step dancing contests, which required ferry rides across the river to the Ottawa valley. Her home life was filled with old country standards, which she also picked up. Through this and other choral experience, she developed a crystal clear voice and an immaculate harmonic ability. Nathalie and Lynda began playing music together in January of 2002. Together, they discovered a vocal blend and a musical compliment that they knew was meant to be. Both have acknowledged the unique and precious quality of this connection, and both are dedicated to nurturing it, so that their melody, their harmony may be shared with others.

Sep 8 Jennifer Skromeda
A second-generation Scottish-Canadian, Jennifer’s connection to her heritage has given her an intuitive sense for traditional Celtic music. To this she adds the flavours of more modern folk instrumentation and contemporary world beat rhythms, relying on her unerring sense of what’s needed to bring out the story behind the song. With Sandy Thacker on shuttle pipes, Scott Senior (from Moses Mayes) on percussion and Dale Brown (from Dust Rhinos) on electric fiddle, the sound is rich in texture and variety. Her soulful laments, her whimsical humour, her relaxed stage presence and her gift for storytelling combine to make her concerts ‘must see’ events. Jennifer’s flexible performance style makes her a natural for everything from intimate house concert and coffeehouse to the main stages of Celtic and folk festivals. She has shared stages with the likes of Shooglenifty, Vance Gilbert, The Wyrd Sisters and Alex Beaton. Jennifer has appeared twice at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, McPherson (Kansas) Scottish Festival and the Sarnia (Ontario) Highland Games and has also appeared in concert settings like Winnipeg’s West End Cultural Centre. In addition to performing the Celtic repertoire, Jennifer delivers workshops at Celtic festivals and in schools and colleges both in Canada and the U.S. Her dynamic and interactive facilitation style engages and entertains her participants, giving them a hands-on taste of the history, language, music and dance of the Celtic people With the fall 2001 release of her latest CD, ‘THE GREAT SILKIE - Tales of the Celts’, CBC Manitoba produced a full length interview featuring Jennifer, which was aired on ‘Arts Encounters’, ‘Culture Shock’ and the ‘Weekend Morning Show’. All of her recordings receive regular airplay on local, regional and national radio stations as well as on Isles FM, BBC Scotland and in the U.S. Her previous recording, ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ was recorded live by the CBC in 1998.

Sep 13 Jeremy Fisher & The John Henrys
Jeremy Fisher grew up in a small Canadian steeltown where music is a tradition carried out late at night in the kitchens and living rooms of its working-class people. His music resonates with the honesty of those roots and the spontaneity of his lifestyle, creating a sound that is at once familiar and unique. In his early twenties, Jeremy incorporated his fascination with the human condition and love for bicycles, and decided to pedal to the end of any road he could find. Since then he has clocked thousands of miles and kilometers across the U.S. and Canada, spanning the largest white sand beaches, to the smallest prairie towns, to the largest body of fresh waters, and back again. His songs tell stories of the people and places he has come to know along the way. "Back Porch Spirituals," his solo debut, is a musical collection of his journal writings - a first hand account of what it is like to trace the cultural outline of the true North American Continent along its winding back roads. The recording features guest performances by Laura Veirs, who adds some tasteful 2nd guitar parts and lilting harmony vocals, and by Artis the Spoonman, who empties the kitchen sink to provide his trademark driving rhythm behind one of the album's livelier tracks. For the most part it is Jeremy Fisher's lone voice, guitar, and harmonica that tell these stories in the tradition of John Prine, Woody Guthrie, and Stompin' Tom Conners, as he takes his place among a culture of troubadours who's music is kept alive in the living rooms, kitchens, and on the back porch steps of homes all across this land.
The John Henrys are a trio that were formed as a vehicle for Rey Sabatin's original music. Delightful, and skilled this trio turned in a great performance at last month's Next Stage.

Sep 20 The Dirty Flannel Dawg
The Dirty Flannel Dawg is actually three people; the Dirty Flannel Dawg, who is one person all by himself, and his band, who are a bass player and a drummer and together they make up The Dirty Flannel Dawg, the three of them. Now this sounds kinda like some religious information or something, but it ain't, it's just the way it is, is all. You're gonna hear some real old blues tunes, some real fine country music (none of this "New Country" type stuff), and maybe even some country swing if you're real good. If you're bad, Matt might tell a joke, or Dave might sing, and you wouldn't want that, now, would you? Good tunes, well played, and a good time is had by everybody.

"...the great advocate of other people's music is one of the best singer-songwriters we have... amazing and his lyric content is huge." Frank Peebles, The Free Press, BC

With solid roots in the traditional North American folk repertoire, a passionate love of music and charismatic natural presence, Danny delivers songs that speak to a love of life in all its grand stupidity; songs that are funny, smart and touching. He seamlessly marries traditional “frailing” techniques with rock/pop aesthetics to pay homage to and transcend genre. Danny’s years of stage experience pay off big in his live performances. He is an award winning actor with a powerful presence on the stage.
